In George Orwell's prophetic tome 1984 (written in 1949), the Ministry of Truth is a government agency serving as a bureau of misinformation used to control an unsuspecting public. One of its functions is to re-write history, sending original documents down the "memory hole" (to be destroyed). This is done so much more efficiently today.
