May the Force be with you

What’s with all things Star Wars?

Have you seen the “commemorative” Star Wars toilet paper boxed set yet? (This comes close.)

What hasn’t been branded and marketed with the latest Star Wars campaign? Do we have such vacuous lives that a movie release now gives us focus and purpose? People have been standing in line for almost two weeks to see this thing!

Doesn’t it seem all a bit too contrived? How are everyone and everything now “in” on this? When did we all become Star Wars fans?

As a 15-year-old in 1977, I remember seeing a cardboard cut-out of C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca advertising the upcoming movie. I said to my friends: “This is the dumbest-looking move I’ve ever seen!”

I was so wrong.

When I finally saw Star Wars, I walked out of the theater sensing I had just experienced something spectacular, even mystical. A storyline involving “the Force” — with Jedis, Darth Vader and the Dark Side — was clearly an allegory of good versus evil, God and Satan, something much "bigger" than this world. It was the promise of human progress and redemption.

Star Wars wasn’t just a movie. It was a religion!

And, as religions go, it became a cult.

I won’t be queuing at midnight to see the latest iteration, but I will enjoy the movie when it comes to the dollar theater…or to VidAngel.

Speaking of VidAngel…that's the best deal in town. You can watch almost any movie, any time, any where, any way you want — with or without vulgarity, obscenity, sexuality or violence — for just $1. I’ve already cancelled Netflix. VidAngel is much better.

They even have Star Wars for free!

Don’t forget to mention I referred you. (I want my cut of the action!)
